On the Today programme this morning, Terry Smith, chief executive of the City broker Tullett Prebon, was brought in to explain how the markets would be likely to react to a Labour/Libdem coalition. It is noticeable that the BBC is thoroughly incapable of challenging spokespeople from the City in the way that they would challenge a politician.

Smith said “thing they are missing is that they’re not in control of the (economic) situation – the market is”. Yep, this, not which way the deal goes, is what renders our votes meaningless. When you consider that the City is responsible for the financial crisis we’re in, the lack of scrutiny, challenge and ultimately correction of the markets’ role on our society is breathtaking.
